Becoming a Freemason

To be one, ask one

Freemasons do not recruit by knocking on doors. The first step has always been yours. Here is what follows.

Who can join

Purbeck Lodge welcomes men aged 18 and over, from any background, who are of good character and believe in a Supreme Being. You do not need to know a Freemason already.

  1. Make an enquiry. Send us a few lines about yourself using the form on this page.
  2. Meet us informally. A drink or supper with a couple of members, and a look round Branksome Masonic Hall.
  3. A friendly interview. A conversation with the Lodge committee so both sides can be sure it is right for you.
  4. The ballot. The members vote on your proposal at a regular meeting.
  5. Initiation. Your first ceremony, and the start of the journey.

What it costs

There is a one-off joining fee, an annual subscription and the cost of dining after meetings. Across English Freemasonry annual costs average around £200 a year. We will give you Purbeck Lodge’s current figures when we meet.

Women Freemasons

Women can be Freemasons too. Lodges under the United Grand Lodge of England, including Purbeck, are for men. Two Grand Lodges in England are for women: The Order of Women Freemasons, the oldest and largest, and the Honourable Fraternity of Ancient Freemasons, founded in 1913. They work the same ceremonies, wear the same regalia, and work alongside UGLE on the Universities Scheme and community projects.
